My Uncle, Harry Hart, used to work doing this work on the upper part of the Androscoggin River in Megalloway.

Men freeing logs that piled up due to ice jams in the river in the spring.

This was called “Rearing”. River drivers would free all of the logs that didn’t make through the spring drive and send them down river.
