This is a picture of the “capstan” near the entrance of Thirteen Mile Woods near Bog Brook. It was used to tighten up the booms that were attached from here to the other side . This held back thousands of cords of logs up river for over three miles upstream. When the booms were released or tripped , the logs would float downriver to the mills in Berlin. This was called “Bog Brook Trip”.
